Mitchell, SD: Mitchell Corn Palace

mitchell corn palace
When corn is your life, when it's what supports your community, provides your sustenance, and is why your mom and dad ever found a reason to get together and give birth to you, it makes sense to erect a palace made of corn.

Mitchell Corn Palace is not exactly made of corn, it's just decorated with corn cobs and corn husks.  But then again, around these parts, corn is only reason why people have jobs here.  It's the only reason why people continue to live here.  It's ultimately what generates money around here.  For that matter, the Mitchell Corn Palace may as well be made entirely from corn.

Originally built in 1892 to showcase the fertile farm fields of South Dakota, "The Corn Belt Exposition" was used to attract people into settling into the 40th State.  Over the years, the Corn Palace was rebuilt and redesigned numerous times.

Today, the Mitchell Corn Palace serves as a sports arena and live music venue.

Inside there are several dioramas and displays celebrating the greatness of corn.  There's a gift shop and snack bar.  Outside, there are several shops and places to eat.

The Corn Palace itself is not worth an overnight stay in Mitchell, but it is a worth a visit, just to see and experience, especially if you're already riding your motorcycle across South Dakota.

The best time to visit Mitchell Corn Palace is at the last week of August when the city holds the Corn Palace Festival.  It's a week long carnival event of live music, crafts and food.

Sash and I arrived a week late, missing the Festival.  But we were able to watch a girls volleyball game, which for me was more entertaining.  We sat for a match as we rested from a long stretch that started in Spirit Lake, IA with a destination in Chamberlain, SD.

The United States is incredibly dependent on corn, not just for food, but for everything!

I stopped at the Corn Palace in Mid-July as I was heading East on I-90 but I didn't go inside. I thought that it was a must see place. I only missed you by about 2 months

Did you go to Wall Drugs ? they had signs for nearly 100 miles so I just had to stop there too

  2. To bad Monsanto has turned wonderful corn into a poison intelligent people won't eat. I miss it a lot, but not enough to risk dieing for it.
