Denver, CO: Making Connections

Highway with Mom and Brother
When Sash and I planned this six-month motorcycle road trip, we knew right away each of us wanted to go to Denver. I wanted to see my mother and brother. Sash wanted to see her old high school buddy.

If anything, Denver is the one destination that we had penciled in as a must, while every other destination has still thus far been spontaneous.

The last time I had seen my mom was not even a full year ago, just last July. But in the months since, I lost my father to cancer. And so after spending a lifetime hiding my emotions and feelings from her, I now feel all the more determined to open myself. The same with my brother. He and I have always been on good terms, we just never seem to communicate all that much. I want that to change. When the time comes that mom passes on, he'll be the only family I have.

Meanwhile, Sash and her friend Kim worked on the school newspaper together when they were in high school. Kim married early and settled down while Sash bounced around from place to place. The two would keep in touch at high school reunions and later on through Facebook.

So when we got into Denver, Kim and her husband invited us to stay at their house in Golden. They've been more than accommodating, and it's been a real blast. We're also saving a bunch of money on lodging. But Sash has been done well to repay the gesture by cooking them dinner a few nights, and taking them out for drinks, and showing them a good time.

As it turns out, both Sash and Kim have really hit it off together, reaching a level of closeness that perhaps only decades of life's ups and down could only make more meaningful and definitive.

While I've been able to get more off my chest with my mother, I think I've really gained ground with my brother. I can already feel a closer, more open relationship with him. And that's what I need for myself, someone I can go to for advice and give me support when I need it the most.

Just a couple of days after we got into Denver, we took Sash's Ninja 500 into Thunderbird Motorcycles to get a new pair tires and to put on new clutch and brake levers. Thunderbird is a pretty cool place, and comes with its own bar & grill. They mostly work on Harleys, but they do service all metric makes and models.

Sash is also reaching out to a womens-only motorcycle riding club in town to reach out, meet fellow riders, and do her natural-born marketing thing.

As it stands today, we've been in Denver/Golden for 7 nights, and would've moved on by now, but needed to stay a few more days due to delays in getting the right size tires. But that's fine for us, being in the company of friends and family makes it hard to say goodbye.

We really haven't gone out and seen much of Denver and surrounding areas. We have gone out to eat and drink with my family and Sash's friends, but that's really it. Coming to Denver seems to be more about connecting with people than it is about seeing the sights.

I think you are lucky to be in contact with family, whether you get along or not. I am not in contact with my step brothers and I chose not to be in contact with my Mother whom I know doesn't care about me. I have tried to meet up with my step brothers but they don't seem that interested to keep in touch, so I just gave up. It's not for my lack of trying but unless there is desire from the other side then I have come to the conclusion they don't care about me either.

I don't waste time thinking about it anymore. It used to bother me a lot now that we are getting older but these are things beyond my control no matter how hard I wished it could be different

I hope you received enough motivation in Denver to fill your tank and keep you moving on the road for quite some time.

Come back any time; you're always welcome in the 'guest suite' ;o]
