Golden, CO: A Motorcycle Gold Mine
If you like Coors brand beers, then you're in the right place. Downtown Golden, CO sits at the opposite end of a short street from the home of Coors. Nestled into the hillside lies the plant where tours are offered daily along with free samples. At any of the local pubs and bars one can partake in any Coors product available, as Coors seems to be the reigning God of Golden. When Highway asked, "Do you have anything that is NOT Coors on tap?" the lovely female bartender nearly fainted.
Not Coors? Sacrilegious in Golden.
They do, however, have a few bottles of other beers tucked away for anyone who isn't accustomed to drinking the local Koolaid.
Aside from the Coors worshipers of Golden we stumbled upon many other wonderful finds. Along with the restaurants and shops one would expect in this typical old town setting were some of the best consignment shops I've ever seen. My two favorites, The Clothes Mine and Rewind Consignment, were well appointed, unique and appropriately priced. The Clothes Mine specialized in carefully selected, higher end casual and semi-formal clothing. Each item was well made, beautifully cut and of high quality and style. Rewind Consignment was jam-packed with adorable, kitsch items, each one unique and well loved. It seemed each appealed to a different style of my shopping sensibilities, from clean lines and elegance to chipped, loved and timeless.
This lovely little town rumbled with motorcycles and bustled with diners and shoppers. Spending the day with our friends Guy and Kim made us feel comfortable and connected. The four of us strolled Washington Street, the main drag, examining parked motorcycles, sharing stories and laughing at ourselves. After shopping and eating we made our way to Mountain Toad Brewing, a pub just over the river hiding in the Coors shadow, and imbibed just a bit. We watched the "tubers" float down river, talked of future vacations together, and poked around more shops.
After a day of sun, giggles and perusing, we headed back to camp. I was looking forward to visiting with Guy and Kim before we arrived, but what I've found so often on this trip is that things may not be what we expect. In this case, it was so much more. The friendship and camaraderie we shared with this couple after living in their basement for 10 days will be a part of my life for many days to come. The beautiful town they've chosen for home is a charming place to visit, but to me it's a gold mine of great shopping finds, intriguing historical buildings and great times with dear friends.
