Tulsa, OK: Andolini's Pizzeria

Located in the heart of Tulsa's famed "Cherry St." district, Andolini's Pizzeria has been serving up New York Style pizza in north-east Oklahoma for just over a couple of years.

Sash and I weren't looking for great pizza, just a great place to hang out for some good beer. But after watching servers haul out some really impressive pizza pies out of the kitchen, there just wasn't any holding back for us. We had to have one.

But as it turned out, Andolini's is also a great place for beer. With 26 varieties on tap, and another 50 in bottles, there's plenty to choose from. And these aren't all mainstream brews folks, almost all of them are very fine craft brews, several of which are local to Oklahoma and Tulsa. I started off with the DNR (do not resuscitate) from COOP Ale Works out of Oklahoma City, a heavy belgian style ale at 10% ABV. Then I followed it up with a Duchesse De Bourgogne, a flanders-style red ale from Belgium.

Sash ordered up a bowl of Andolini's famous "Opulent Mac & Cheese", a gluten-free variety of an old American classic, but with Penne Pasta, Pecorino Romano, Mozzarella, Parmesan cheeses, and cream. It's baked in the oven, and served up in all of its gooey decadence. And don't think because its gluten-free it tastes funny, this tasted amazing. I was so busy forking this stuff into my grill, I didn't have enough time to judge the flavor of the gluten-free pasta.

But the "Pièce de résistance" was yet to come.

And when it finally did come, we were blown away.

The Mastunicola Lardon pizza comes in a 14" pie. Dubbed, "Naples first pizza", it's basically a bacon pizza. Rather, it's thin sliced pancetta, layered with Pecorino Romano cheese, rendered Lardo and fresh basil. It's was gooey, cheesy, bacony madness. Sash and I were so consumed with eating our slices, we lost count of how many pieces each of us ate, and ended up arguing over the last one. (We brokered peace and split the last piece).

Andolini's Pizzeria is the creation of two brothers, Jim & Mike Bausch, who actually started another Andolini's earlier in 2008, in nearby Owasso. Mike is actually a graduate of the International School of Pizza in San Francisco, studying the under the world famous pizza chef, Tony Gemignani.

And the quality of Andolini's Pizzeria has apparently left a mark on the pizza-goers of Tulsa, with lines waiting out the door. If you get there around 4:00pm, you shouldn't have a problem getting an easy table.

Tell them "Road Pickle" sent you!
